00:00 Start

In the previous episode, USS Montpelier (688 Flight III) destroyed the enemy battlegroup leaving Cam Ranh, and conducted a TLAM strike on the Chinese military port of Shantou. Our current priority mission is to hunt down a PLAN sub wolfpack operating in South China Sea, but we had to go to Guam to get reloads first.

02:20 Leaving Guam

25-OCT-2000 Just west of Guam

We left Guam after reloading expended ordnance and sped northwest.

26-OCT-2000 Philippine Sea

We just received word that the PLAN wolfpack attacked several convoys and caused significant damage. PRIORITY MISSION FAILED.

NEW PRIORITY MISSION: Destroy PLAN amphibious landing force leaving Qingdao for Scarborough Shoal.

We arrived at the op area that afternoon, and continued to dodge contacts for the next 72 hours.

04:42 Target sighted

29-OCT-2000 South China Sea

We dodged multiple PLAN contacts, and set ourselves in the convoy's path, but a PLAN subsurface contact got to us first. We killed a Romeo and a Ming. Then another Romeo.

10:43 Target Intercepted

A PLAN ASW helo started dipping then dropped a torpedo only 3 km to our west! We turned away.

We managed to classify all the contacts: 5 neutral merchants, 5 landers / transports, 4 escorts, and 1 sub (Song-class).

We targeted the closest enemy vessels first with 3 torpedoes. The transports / landers turned northward to flee. We killed Sovremenny and Jianghu3, as well as the Song sub.

The remaining escorts, Jianghu and Luhu, charged us, and were sunk in turn.

Soon, all transports were sunk, and there were no civilian casualties. PRIORITY MISSION COMPLETE. COMSUBPAC was very pleased.

NEW PRIORITY MISSION: PLAN is scrambling their sole Xia-class SSBN from Qingdao, probably escorted by Russian attack subs. Destroy them all.

We headed toward the final ops area...

19:23 The final showdown starts...

30-OCT-2000 East of Shanghai

We intercepted the suspected PLAN subsurface contact...

There is just under 100m of water, so we deployed towed array... started listening, but we got... nothing.

We decided to risk it all and go active for 2 pings... and found a contact to our southeast. We fired a Mk 48 at it. No response from the contact.

As torpedo approached the bogey, 2 active pings rang out. There were TWO enemy subs there! Both contacts were ID'ed as Akulas. We got 1 hit, then fired 3 more torpedoes to kill both.

We detected a new contact S3 and launched 2 torpedoes at it. S3 was a 3rd attack sub, a Victor III. As the two torpedoes pincered S3, we found S4, the Xia SSBN.

Two torpedoes chased S3 around, and one of the torpedoes had to circle... only to lock onto to the Xia!

Victor III was hit and sunk, and then the Xia was sunk. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

We have won the war and the campaign!

30:25 Campaign End

Campaign Stats: 36 days at war, 15 missions accomplished, 80 enemy vessels sunk (25 warships, 39 subs, 16 transports/landers), total tonnage 331490 tons.

In the hypothetical Cold Waters (DotMod) Y2000 NATO campaign, Taiwan declared independence, and Great Britain delayed returning Hong Kong to China after massive protests. China threatened retaliation, which crashed the Asian economy. Russia decided to have an arms fire sale to China... and China is buying naval assets (along with Russian "advisors") to take over the South China Sea and its resources, plus attacks on nearby countries. NATO decided to intervene... and the first response was US Navy Submarines... Specifically, USS Montpelier, a Flight III 688-class nuclear attack submarine...

If you would rather watch USS Seawolf in action...
