Yamato was the heaviest and most powerfully armed battleships ever constructed before WWII and it has carried a significant weight in Japanese culture since then.
You have to defend the ship from (Allied?) attacks. You steer two crosshairs at once, one for your machinegun and one for your cannons. The machinegun can destroy airplanes while the cannon can destroy boats and submarines. You get a star for every enemy you defeat, and each round ends after 16 stars. The rounds goes from day, evening and night before going back to day again. And so it continues until the mighty Yamato is defeated.
It is one of those games that you just keep playing, trying to beat your own highscore.
