As it turns out, the curveball we left off at last time was indeed a cliffhanger at the tail-end of a chapter. Our focus would quickly shift to another of the Monstrums, as we explore more of the town and encounter new side characters.

While I'm enjoying the plot and (mostly) the action, the surprisingly-compact chapter structure thus far is making Ys IX out to feel startlingly formulaic - each chapter seems to include a specific new part of the city to unlock, another Monstrum whose backstory we learn, and revisits to the prison (in more ways than one). I have to figure that at some point the scope will expand and things will become less cut-and-dry, but this is a worrying pattern to see early on in the latest installment of a series that has typically felt far more inspired in its design.

One thing that strikes me as odd is how some "sidequests" seem alarmingly substantial and plot-critical - yet theoretically you could avoid taking them on if you opted to spend an hour mind-numbingly fighting Lemures in the city instead (another thing that feels annoyingly formulaic - sidequests are equated to "currency" that gives them the appearance of busywork or filler, although some of them are far more interesting than that). I have to wonder whether skipping the more notable sidequests would have serious consequences, or if this perception of choice is nothing more than an illusion?
