Zackery Wilson - tu-BIT
"tu-BIT," a single-movement work for tuba and fixed media, was written by composer Zackery Wilson (2012). The piece was commissioned in the spring of 2012 by tubist Daniel Frost. Following its completion, Frost premiered the work in April 2012 at the University of Texas at Austin.
Program notes:
"Lounge music vs. old-school chipmusic found in Nintendo games vs. modern, digital music." Lifted straight from the email exchange I had with tubist Daniel Frost (who commissioned the piece), these are some of the ideas that sparked the initial construction of tu-BIT. Subsequently, a unique narrative was formed:
"As the piece begins, we find ourselves in the middle of a lounge bar, at which point the 'show' has not yet begun. Once the tubist enters the bar and walks onstage, the music starts and the performer begins with your standard tuba shtick: yes, plenty of 'oom' (less of 'pah'). After a certain point though, the tubist decides to break loose of such 'restraints' and starts to play more dynamically. However, after some intense musical licks, the tubist realizes that he has perhaps 'bitten off more than he can chew' and quickly comes to a crashing halt. All of the soloing leaves him hanging on for dear life (cue the EKG machine), at which point he 'resuscitates" himself and, thereafter, tries again. How will he fare this time around?"
