Zelda: Link's Awakening DX [GBC] (Commentary) #04, Camera Shop; Ukuku Prairie
This is video #04 in my playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX for the GameBoy Color. This video contains commentary. To view the non-commentary version, click here: https://youtu.be/-NVkHPXtZQY
Previously, Link cleared Level 2: Bottle Grotto and began unearthing some Secret Seashells and Pieces of Heart. He will continue his treasure hunt as he seeks a way into the next dungeon. Before going on, be sure you have the Shovel from Mabe Village's shop in addition to the Level 1 and Level 2 treasures.
From Mabe Village, he first goes northwest through the Mysterious Forest. He goes beyond the northwest exit from the forest and north from Weird Mr. Write's house.
A cave entrance can be found north of Mr. Write's house (time 1:10). By leaping across the gap with the Roc's Feather, he can get 20 Rupees from a chest.
In the eastern screen of the same cave, he can move aside the skull with the Bracelet L-1 (time 1:39). The chest here contains 50 Rupees. Very nice, indeed!
Now, since he cannot yet go through Goponga Swamp without BowWow, he goes east through the northern part of the Mysterious Forest. He pays a preliminary visit to Crazy Tracy, though it is not really needed yet (time 3:01). Hm, what kind of secret is it that she has for sale?
A couple of screens east of the entrance to the cave where Link rescued BowWow, he finds the Camera Shop (time 3:52). This shop and the photography sidequest are only in the DX version of the game for GameBoy Color, not in the original GameBoy game. Inside, he finds a giant mouse that loves to take photographs. He will take a studio photograph of Link entitled, 'Here Stands a Brave Man.' He will place the photographs in an album called, 'The Travels of Link.' He can take 12 photographs in all. A lot of the photographs that he will take are storyline-sensitive, so if you want them all, be sure to start this quest before infiltrating Kanalet Castle.
Then, Link heads northern and begins exploring Mt. Tamaranch and the Tal Tal Heights a bit.
As Link climbs Mt. Tamaranch north of the Camera Shop, he will run into his friend the owl again (time 5:46). This is the route to the Wind Fish's Egg. The owl reiterates that Link must play the eight Siren Instruments in front of the Wind Fish's Egg to awaken it and leave the island.
To the east of there, Link can find a cave entrance on the lower slopes of Mt. Tamaranch (time 6:42). After progressing through this cave, he will find himself on a ledge one screen to the east on the Tal Tal Mountain Range (time 7:31). A chest out in the open here contains 50 Rupees. Unfortunately, further progression through the Tal Tal Mountain range will have to wait until Link has better items.
However, he can explore Tal Tal Heights to the east of the Camera Shop. It is a little out of sequence. However, in Tal Tal Heights, Link can locate a warp hole (time 9:59). Warp holes will allow him to travel across the island quickly. Link will soon find another warp hole very close to Mabe Village.
Also, directly west of the warp hole, he will find the keyhole for Level 4: Angler's Tunnel (time 10:24).
On his way back to the village, Link maps out the Tabahl Wasteland and the Cemetery. What's a good Zelda game without a cemetery?
He makes his way to Ukuku Prairie, which is directly east of Mabe Village. A couple of screens east of the village shop, he finds another warp hole (time 12:04).
North and west of that screen, he finds a cave entrance east of the Quadruplets' House (time 12:37). After moving the stones and defeating the Green Zols, he can retrieve 50 Rupees from a chest.
For his second photograph, Link can approach BowWow's tiedown stake at Madam MeowMeow's House in Mabe Village (time 13:39). The mouse photographer will take the picture, 'Link Plays with BowWow!' Ha ha ha!
Then, one screen to the south, the mouse will take another photograph when Link peers into the window at Old Man Ulrira's House (time 14:33). He takes the picture, 'Link Discovers Ulrira's Secret!'
Now, Link can get some optional things south of the village. First, he revisits Level 1: Tail Cave (time 15:32). To the north, west, and north, in a Mini-Moldorm room, he can use his shiny new Bombs from the village shop to blast through the western wall (time 16:08). In the room beyond, he collects Secret Seashell #05 from the chest.
Then, Link goes south to Toronbo Shores. A couple of screens east of where he retrieved his sword, he can blast open a cave entrance (time 17:48).
To the north and east from there, he can use the Bracelet to move the boulders so he can open the chest (time 18:19). This chest contains 50 Rupees more for his wallet.
East and south from there, he locates the House by the Bay in the Martha's Bay area (time 18:40). Nothing to do here yet, though.
Description continued in the comments.
