My game design interests literally all started because of one particular sound effect in Zeliard. When you attack an enemy and hit it but it doesn't defeat it though it takes damage, a certain sound effect plays. The one I'm hearing is not even close to what I heard 25 years ago. That case was on a Tandy 1000 system. The real sound effect I heard sounds sort of like a string instrument with a medium-low pitch. If you recall the sound effects from the cura spell in FF12, what I heard on Zeliard is very similar, just in the form of a pair of 1/16 notes (the second note, I think, was 1 or 2 half-steps higher in pitch than the first) instead of a constant pitch with a volume shift but it's just about the right pitch. When you get through the game normally, leveling up along the way, it takes fewer hits to defeat the enemies which means a shorter duration of that sound effect. From noticing how the leveling up affects how much damage you do to an enemy where the first level up doesn't boost the power, I knew that, to prolong the sound effect, I had to get through to level 8 with only but a single level up. 60 HP was all I could possibly have throughout pretty much the whole game. It took several tries to defeat the dragon boss of level 7 but the rest of the game was otherwise easy enough. Level 6 was rather tricky by itself though the boss went down in 2 hits. When I got to level 8 with that single level up that 25 years ago, I really, really loved how the 100 plays of that sound effect at speed 5 came out. This video shows the demonstration of the setup and why I had to keep within just the single level up in order to make it.

I have no clue how it's done or how to replicate the actual Tandy 1000 audio I heard with Dos Box. If anyone has any ideas, if it's even possible, let me know.
