[Zero Ranger] Type C Normal Mode 2-ALL No Continue CLEAR (Score: 569,420) [CC Commentary]
Whoa, this game is certainly my favorite! I love it!
Oh, by clicking this video you acknowledge that you're watching a 48-ish minutes full of spoilers. Notice the lack of green?
You can move, shoot, then as you progress the run you can choose a back shot / wide shot, lock on / charge shield and sword / drill. For this run I chose back shot, charge shield and sword for stage design reasons. You can't bomb, sort of. With Type B you will eventually can with the charge shield. The shields themselves can erase or slowdown bullets, though.
This game has a very healthy stage design. Close to no repetition, many opportunities to improve performance, complex but not too punishing scoring system that will still give you good amount of extents even though the game tells you your scoring sucks, many expert techniques to learn and use, it's great including the "2nd loop"! The style is close to Treasure's. The patterns are generally fast and prioritizes variety over pressure. The exception of its greatness is... oh boy, the RNG can be quite painful especially on the last 3 bosses. When you're trapped in a bad position and an undesired pattern, there goes your life.
People would say this is recommended for newcomers. For Light Mode, I guess it's pretty true, but Normal Mode? No, this mode kicks butt. It's still nice and fun with continues, but it's still a demanding game that will test both your shooting, dodging and weapon choice alike. Not for the faint of heart! Plus, look at this video's length. This game demands your stamina!
I also have to mention that at some spots perhaps it's impossible to keep the multiplier not broken due to long nonexistence of enemies between the links. Maybe it's more possible than I thought? But it can be quite tight at times. And regarding the bonus items the requirements to get them can be obnoxiously strict especially on Stage 1s. Weird considering the latter stages aren't that demanding for it.
That's all I can say regarding Zero Ranger as the game. As a product? Rather than close to a Treasure game it's closer to Undertale, with its overload of references and tongue-in-cheek meta stuff. The good ending, shown in this video, is locked until you "broke the time loop curse". When you do that the game will become a normal game complete with having stuff written in English. The references is like the game is telling me they don't have much confidence on their own identity, which is a shame that they have cool mech designs and visuals here worth remembering!
Between the two, though, while both have the same "haha, look how meta I am" level, I much prefer to play Zero Ranger over Undertale. This game appreciates performance much more and when the cheekiness is removed this game will still be a very solid experience, ironically proven by itself.
Zero Ranger is very, very recommended! Just note the game won't hesitate to kick you in the butt when you make mistakes.
