A free companion standalone game to a licensed game? Why not? This one is great! Provided you don't get hit and pick the right supports.
I have 0 knowledge about the series but one thing I care is this is a shmup. This is a horizontal shmup on foot (a rarity outside of beat 'em up minigames!). You can shoot, you can use the wind slash which has a limited piercing property but dishes out strong damage and erases bullets on the way. Very cool! Then you can have supports / party members. They're invincible and their usefulness wildly vary. From must have to useless. The active support determines which bombs that will be shot too. Pick the green girl for the normal shots, which is a rapid wide shot between long intervals and the dual saber girl for the bomb. For some reason on the final boss last phase the bomb turns into making the main character do the bombing itself, and it's the most useful and the strongest. Why can't I use it manually before!? Because this is an anime game!?
The game is very fun on Normal. For shmup veterans and action game veterans alike it's a pushover since it's not that crowded and life recovery is common even on Death, but you shoot stuff and it does its job really well with the bullet-cancelling wind slash and all. On Death? Also fun, but doing mistakes here is devastating! When you get hit, your speed will go down, which is more fine than it sounds, but powering down is very devastating. Stage 1 through 4 is manageable to go through without getting hit, but Stage 5 before the final boss is a cheap middle finger to you. Onslaught from every direction and you're too weak even on max power! The main strategy is to not use bombs at all until Stage 5 so you can minimize the hits and power downs you'll take on your path towards the final boss. While it's fun to figure out (and have the luck) how to survive without using bombs, early on it's very frustrating!
The game is short and sweet too, around 18 minutes per run. And since it's free, when you have the time to play this, give this game a go! It's not wrong to go with this game.
