Psyvariar is a very weird beast, and this No Continue run alone barely scratched the surface.


Psyvariar is a shmup developed by Success. You can shoot, you can wiggle the move button as a way to focus your shots (on console ports including Delta there is a separate roll button, rapid for quicker movement, hold for slower movement, so you don't need to damage your analog stick / directional buttons) and bomb. The main point of the game is to level up so you can humanely beat the boss at 6-B, or if you think you can't beat it yet, 6-A. It's an insanely quick-per-run shmup and without the leveling and i-frames it's pretty much a mediocre high-octane shmup.


Leveling up is important because not only it will transform your ship and upgrade your shot, your DPS directly depends on your level. Stage difficulties when it branches mainly differentiate the enemy placements, but not the bullet patterns. But the higher the stage level, the higher your level need to be to dish out faster DPS. You can't extend, but you can get more bombs. When you simply shoot down enemies like any normal shmup, you won't get much EXP to level up, which thankfully the game is still great fun on the lowest of route levels, but then how to properly level up to access the harder routes?


Buzzing.


Enemies are limited, bullets are limited, stages are limited, so grazing / buzzing enemy bullets is key to raise up your level. It also helps that when you level up you gain i-frames and when invincible you still can buzz bullets, so the optimum way is to be very close with the bullets while in the level up-high! Which is one of the most addicting mechanic ever in gaming. Level up, level up, level up!


I think Medium Unit is the easiest of the bunch. The level ceiling doesn't seem to be that high compared to Revision and Delta.
