When one talks about some of the spookiest phenomena, you think of ghosts and other supernatural beings that bump into you at night. Only a few times do we consider some of the creepy tales about the universe. These unseen forces in outer space have remained a mystery to scientists, and despite the several quality years put into research, there's still a lot to explore.
Without further ado, these are the ten mysterious things happening in our weird universe.
10. The big crunch
It is no news that whatever has a beginning must come to an end. The universe isn't left out of this theory too. There are lots of findings that point out that the world would also come to a halt at some point. Before now, this theory was called the big crunch suggesting a time when our expanding universe would give way to the force of gravity. Asa result, the clusters, galaxies, and planets would be drawn together into a single dense mass point until everything vanishes.
Scientists say all these would happen in a billion years to come. These days, it is not only the big crunch theory that is touted but other ideas like the big bounce, big freeze, and big rip. Even if we don't know how this universe ends, we know it will be massive. Although we've always wanted to learn more about our world, only a few answers are at our disposal. While we wait for the big event, let's enjoy our drifting world.

9. Cosmic rays
Outer space is an intense place and not for the faint of heart. Fortunately for us, we are on earth and enjoy some measure of protection from certain factors like cosmic rays even though our safety is relative. Cosmic rays are high-energy particles from outer space that regularly make their way to the earth. Initially, scientists thought they were harmless because our atmosphere protects us from them. However, there are exceptions to this assertion.
These rays can affect humans and electronics. In the stratosphere, they can affect human beings and electronics. Pilots and astronauts are exposed to higher radiation levels than an average human on earth. This causes severe damage to their health. This high energy can disrupt electronic data, thereby leading to system crashes. In our world, where everything is driven by technology, this isn't good news. Scientists are still studying the phenomenon and its impact on the human race and find the most plausible solution.

8. The evil twins – Antimatter
Imagine a parallel universe where everything is the opposite of what you are used to. White is black and up is down, and matter turns out to be antimatter. I know this sounds crazy, but the sub-atomic like the neutrons, protons, and electrons all have evil twins. Antimatter mass is about the same as ordinary particles but the opposite electrical charge.
As a result, antimatter wipes out normal matter when they come in contact. Both of them are destroyed in the blink of an eye. Also, note that this evil twin phenomenon can eliminate every one of us listening to this. Not to worry, there's only very little in our atmosphere. What's more confusing is that this antimatter is helpful in some cases. For instance, scientists are considering ways to explore the energy released by matter interactions to power spacecraft. If this pulls through, they'll have to find a better name for the phenomenon because "Evil Twins" would be outdated and meaningless.

7. Dark matter
Everything we know about the universe, the galaxies, asteroids, and stars, consists of less than 5% of the entire universe. Scientists think that there's an unknown 25% called dark matter, but they've not been able to unearth what this component is up to. While we don't have the details, we're sure that it exists because everything moves to its gravitational tune. Researchers describe this as a spider web that holds the fast-moving galaxies together.
It is so much that it bends the appearance of space so that whenever astronomers observe distant galaxies, they appear distorted. There is loads of evidence that points to dark matter, but the details are sketchy, if not non-existent. Some say it is made of undiscovered particles, while others think it an undiscovered property of gravity. Whatever is the case, we had better find answers to this puzzle; else, we'll be several steps behind.
