#1124 Mortal Kombat Armageddon (PS2) Hidden Characters (3/3): Taven playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Taven in Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Armageddon.
The generic protagonist of Konquest Mode, who is so useless that he fails entirely in his mission, as seen in the ending. Jesus, that’s more sadistic than a Sierra point-and-click game. Taven is also probably one of the worst names in the entire series; it sounds like someone used an MK Name Generator to make it, or just put all the MK names together and worked out what the average Mortal Kombat name would be.
As a character, nah. Just nah. Taven is actually pretty shit. Limited in terms of combos, only two movesets, and neither moveset is stylish or decent in the slightest. Taven really does seem like he came out of some generator for generic characters. His design is dull, his moves are dull, hell, even his clothes are dull. I’ve heard of a blank slate character before, but this is just ridiculous.
Taven has four special moves; a shoulder charge, a projectile, a move where he dashes back and then forwards for an auto-combo, and a ground-pound which I’m pretty sure he took from Jax. Like his brother Daegon, he uses a Drake Sword for a weapon, but obviously doesn’t have the strength requirement for it because he swings it like it was a zweihander. Which is to say, really slowly. Hell, he’s so slow that he’s easily countered by characters with faster movesets. This is particularly bad, as the one martial arts moveset he does have is incredibly limited in terms of combos.
On the whole, Taven is pretty shite, if I’m being brutally honest. His generic design, undercooked moveset and lacklustre personality really sums up the generic feeling of this entire game, and encapsulates that sense of mediocrity I always get when playing it. There’s just something off about this game which I never really cared for; it really does feel like the MK series was out of ideas by this point.
That’s it for MK Armageddon; a mediocre entry with some merit. MKvDC won’t be for a little while yet, as I couldn’t access Dark Kahn, so next time it’s on to the brilliant Mortal Kombat reboot, MK9.
