#1117 Mortal Kombat Unchained (PSP) Exclusive Characters (1/4): Kitana playthrough.
A playthrough of the exclusive character Kitana in Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Unchained.
Unchained is a bizarre game. For one, it is an extremely faithful recreation of Mortal Kombat Deception, ported to the PSP with the same level of quality that Tekken 5 DR and Tekken 6 were. It not only includes all the characters from the previous versions of the game (including Goro and Shao Kahn), but also includes the entire of Konquest Mode, and four exclusive characters. Hell, the game still mostly contains the unplayable characters too, including the unplayable versions of now-playable characters.
The four new characters added to the game were Kitana, Jax, Frost and Blaze. Unchained is almost a semi-sequel of sorts, given that it re-adds characters who were previously out of action such as Kitana and Frost, and gives a bit more purpose to Blaze, which helps to set up the next game in the series. Here’s the kicker however. These characters are all from Deadly Alliance, of course. Guess what? They are literally just ported assets from Deadly Alliance, same (few) moves, such fighting styles, and only one fatality per characters, with Blaze still not even having one. They are the most exemplary examples of a bonus feature I’ve ever seen, and it’s something which I would have expected more from Capcom. That’s appropriate I suppose, given that Deception was basically Midway’s Street Fighter Alpha 3 considering how much it was milked as a game, and it makes sense that they’d lazily add “new” characters in the same way Capcom did with the PSP port of Alpha 3. The thing is though, that port of Alpha 3 added Eagle and Yun from Capcom vs. SNK 2, and Ingrid from Capcom Fighting Evolution, so it was a little more varied and interesting. Here, it feels like Boon and co. were just being a bit lazy.
If you’ve seen my two previous Kitana videos then, well, you’ve seen everything Kitana has to offer. Kitana’s return makes a lot of sense, given that she’s an integral part of the story (usually), and it means that the three female ninjas are finally reunited in one game again. Kitana functions as such did in MKDA, right down to her fan-lift move causing her to change to her Fans weapon-style. Something of note is that she can actually immobilise Onaga with her fan lift move, which is odd considering he’s usually immune to projectiles. This is either a bug, or it’s a reference to Kitana’s ability to use it against bosses in MK2, I’m not sure which. Schrodinger’s Feature strikes again.
The exclusive characters also all have their own endings. Kitana’s kinda sucks though, as she ends up crying in despair at the realisation that conflict is seemingly never-ending. This is of course sacrilegious, as Best Girl shouldn’t be reduced to tears, and her smile is one which should be protected. If she ever even smiles, I honestly can’t remember. I mean, it's not like you can exactly see it behind that mask.
On the whole, this is a really expansive and honestly quite decent game. It’s perhaps a little redundant nowadays, what with PS2 emulation being a easy thing to do, but adding exclusive characters was a smart move on Boon and co.’s part, meaning there’s still a reason for die-hard fans of the game/series to come back to it.
Next up, it’s other Best Girl.
