#1129 Mortal Kombat 9 (Steam) Bosses (5/7): Classic Smoke playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden boss Klassic/Classic Smoke in the Steam port of Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat 9/MK9.
It’s cool to see MK2 Smoke again, but unfortunately, he’s not very good. I previously looked at him in MK Deception as well as MK2, which this version is based on.
To some it up, Classic Smoke is just garbage. He has three special moves, all borrowed from Scorpion as you’d expect, and barely any combos. Furthermore, my God, his moves are so goddamn delayed for some reason. Compared to nearly every other character I’ve tried, you have to be so goddamn precise with his inputs or they just won’t register for some reason. This is really, really compounded by the fact that for some reason his spear attacks combo into itself, which in this game renders itself useless, and it’s further hampered by the fact that what few combos he does have are so goddamn awkward to use; that (Back+FP, BK) is so difficult to get right considering his delayed inputs, and trying to get off a spear attack afterwards is difficult too with the awkward timing he has. Yeah, you can tell he wasn’t supposed to be played as, because an AI would not have a problem with this but for an amateur human such as myself it is a goddamn nightmare. I’ll mention this in some of my later playthroughs too, but the tedium for this just caused me to zone out after a while and just become less responsive to what was going on, which compounded issues further. That’s definitely burn-out seeping in, I suspect.
I like what they went for with Klassic Smoke here, but he’s so basic that he’s barely even worth playing as. As I’ve said before with MK bosses, if they’re unplayable, it’s for a reason; they’re supposed to be a spectacle to fight. Reveal the curtain and, well, you’ll just end up being disappointed. Only having Scorpion’s spear and his Hellfire Punch, as well as his air throw, is authentic to be sure, but perhaps just a bit too authentic. The other hidden bosses mix it up a bit more and I think it works in their favour, whereas playing as Smoke here is just a bit underwealming. As it was finally getting to play him in MK2 a few years ago. Sometimes just don’t change, I guess.
Next up, another look at Noob Saibot.
