A playthrough of the hidden character Quan Chi in the Steam port of Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat 9/MK9.

MK9 originally had two hidden characters in the form of Quan Chi and Cyber Sub-Zero, both of whom were unlocked via playing through Story Mode. In the Komplete Edition of the game however, they are available from the start. Given that this is the version nearly anyone would buy in this day and age, it’s arguably redundant to even cover them, but I thought I might as well for the sake of it.

Quan Chi was introduced in MK4 as an accomplice of Shinnok, and later teamed up with Shang Tsung in the eponymous Deadly Alliance. He’s been a fan-favourite since his introduction, and apart from Tanya is the only surviving new character from MK4. Which, really, isn’t exactly difficult when your competition is Reiko, Jarek, Fujin, etc. That said, I always thought he looked like an evil version of Uncle Fester. And to this day I still think I’m right about that; he seems like the kind of guy who could light up a lightbulb just by placing it in his mouth. I previously covered him back in Deception too, of course, but it was interesting to see him be added as the only MK4 character in this game; really a testament to his popularity.

In terms of gameplay, don’t expect anything too special from this point onwards. Even though I enjoy this game and everything it stands for, I simply cannot get used to its fighting engine for the better part and have a tendency to fuck up with most characters. Simultaneously, despite playing like a more traditional 2D fighting game, MK still includes many of its classic inputs and special moves, which feel quite erratic here and I found it pretty difficult to get my head around the timings for attacks and sometimes entire characters’ movesets. It doesn’t help that all attacks feel like they have some weight and delay to them, meaning that they don’t execute in the instantaneous way in which they do in a Street Fighter game, for example. It’s something you can and could get used to, but I don’t really have the patience for it currently and will probably try it a bit more in the future.

Gameplay-wise, Quan Chi is pretty decent if a touch erratic. He has a stun special move which forces the opponent to move zombie-like towards him, although getting it to land is a bitch. He also has ground projectiles as well as a skull projectile, which can lend themselves to some decent combos, but I didn’t really find him a pick-up-and-play character to any extent.

Next up, a character people wanted for years.
