19 Easter Eggs In Marvel What If Episode 4 Breakdown + Why The Watcher Reveals Himself Explained
In Christine’s first scenes, she notes that Doctor Strange has completed a complicated hemispherectomy. If you don’t know, in one of Doctor Strange’s comics, he refuses to perform one, but this comic also features strange trying to lead a double life and we know in this episode of what if that there are two stranges leading two lives, in one universe, so that comment from Christine at the very beginning teases the entire episode of what if episode 4
Strange learns of Cagliostro and his manipulation of time, and understanding of time from when wong shows the books that masters use in this scene from doctor strange
Speaking of, Christine dying allows strange to advance further than he did in the doctor strange film, because he learned how to use a sling ring without having the ancient one risk his life
We get the same iconic apple scene from 2016
When he operates on the apple, we see that the ancient one replaces Mordo as the voice of reason in this scene
We get the same Dormammu scene with I’ve come to bargain
Nothing is impossible you taught me that is what strange yells at the ancient one nothing is impossible is what the ancient one said before her death, in this scene here.
O bengh is another name for cagliostro in the comics; they are one of the same sorcerer
Strange and Cagliostro have the first same encounter as strange does with kaecilius where they reference strange’s name as being… well, strange
When strange is reading off the books of cagliostro, he reads transmutation, telekinesis, teleportation, which are all powers of these xmen with Thomas Jones being able to transmutate, nightcrawler who can teleport and Professor X who can use telkinesis and if you don't know, doctor strange 2 is recently running this huge rumour to be including the introduction of the xmen, so I can’t help but see this as a forshadow
You can see the Dormammu symbol in the cagliostro book, same from the film
One of the interdimensional beings that Captain Carter fought and presumably killed is the first creature that Doctor Strange encounters
With every being that comes out of the portal that Doctor Strange summons, each monster gets weirder as time goes on, and if you don’t know, the bulk of Doctor Strange’s villains from the comics exhibit monstrous qualities because he fights interdimensional beings who have evolved into weird looking villains
Strange and Uatu the watcher, who has been narrating every episode for us, talk and respond to each other in this. If you don’t know, the pair in the comics can actually interact with one another, Doctor Strange even calling Uatu his friend. Uatu is basically Strange’s Wong in the comics- you know, Strange’s voice of reason, and gets Strange to critically think; as he did in the civil war comic when Doctor Strange chose not to interfere in the civil war plot.
There is a similar shot of Doctor Strange with these tentacles sticking out of him from his shot of all the arms coming out of him in infinity war
Two timelines in one universe is something the ancient one demonstrated to us in the endgame when you remove Infinity stones and create branches in time.
Wong hits the good doctor strange with a guardian of vishanti spell, and the book of vishanti in the comics is a magic spellbook that teaches the reader spells that can counter other magic disciplines outside its own and we see that come in handy when strange was hit with intense evil magic from strange supreme.
Doctor Strange hits himself with the same whip he used on thanos in infinity war
The watcher was ready to intervene with the good doctor strange but the other strange pulled him out. Then, at the end of the episode, Uatu reveals himself to the evil strange. One thing you should know about this watcher, from the comics, Uatu only shows himself if a great threat is coming or a universe is about to be destroyed, and what happened? Strange destroyed his universe completely. So, keep an eye out for the rest of the series when Uatu reveals himself again and expect it to then be a universe-ending event.
