The 2019 Charles Frodsham Double Impulse Chronometer has been described as the most exciting new independent brand watch of this model year. With a 42.2mm 22-karat gold case, a porcelain dial, and a double direct-impulse movement that incorporates the input of George Daniels and Derek Pratt, the UK-manufactured Charles Frodsham boasts impressive pedigree.
Nearly 20 years of development informed the final design of this Charles Frodsham watch. The earliest innovation was George Daniels' double-direct impulse escapement driven by two independent barrels and going trains. The system is a descendant of Abraham Louis Breguet's "natural escapement" of 1802. Since both wheels impulse the balance exclusively in its direction of travel, the frictional losses of a conventional Swiss lever escapement are minimized. British watchmaker and Daniels contemporary, Derek Pratt, offered specific guidance concerning the escapements and implementation of the Daniels concept.
A dial of British-built porcelain features a composition similar to ceramic and a set of fired steel Arabic numerals mounted by protruding "feet." Both Roman numerals and Arabic numerals are available with "radial" setting. At center, the equal-length hands are constructed and annealed using manual means, and the violet tones are heat-tempered to match the color of the numerals. Charles Frodsham specifically chose "London hallmarked" 22-karat yellow gold for the case on the basis of this material's exceptional tone.
Inside the Double Impulse Chronometer, a manual-wind movement with a 36-hour power reserve keeps the time. Peripheral refinements include a full balance bridge, a freesprung balance, a hand-made Breguet overcool, and a caseback power reserve indicator. The 21,600 vph double-direct impulse escapement operates unlubricated for greater efficiency, and a stopworks halts the mechanism once the mainsprings reach the limit of their chronometric power reserves.
