The 2019 Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 tourbillon is a 43.5mm white gold embodiment of over 6,000 hours of manual labor by Greubel Forsey watchmakers and craft artisans. As an outgrowth of the zero-automation techniques recovered with Michel Boulanger during the initial "Naissance d'une Montre" project, the Hand Made 1 requires that all contemporary CNC, electro spark erosion, and LIGA techniques be discarded in favor of tools and methods that would have been available to 18th and 19th century watchmakers.
Each Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 is a 43.5mm case that measures 13.5mm in thickness. The prototype featured herein is composed of white gold, but consumer models may include the option to specify other metals. A manufacture caliber comprises most of the dial and caseback. Each manual-wind example of this caliber will feature a 60-hour power reserve, a one-minute tourbillon regulator with freesprung balance and overcoil hairspring, and a beat rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour.
Small details like the watch's hand-formed Breguet overcoil hairspring, the enamel seconds sub-dial, and the fire-annealed hands require extensive attention in order to reach their final consumer-grade form.
The tourbillon of the Greubel Forsey Hand Made 1 requires 35 times longer to manufacture than a standard tourbillon regulator from the company; a wheel for the drivetrain requires 600 times longer than a regular production unit to fabricate. All told, 95 percent of the Hand Made 1 truly is crafted by hand. Due to production constrains posed by the laborious fabrication process, Robert Greubel and Steven Forsey have declared that their La Chaux-de-Fonds manufacture will produce only two or three examples of the Hand Made 1 per year.
