372023 Jeep Compass First Look: More Powerful Turbo Engine Now Standard
Jeep finally fixes one of the biggest problems with the Compass by adding more than 20 horsepower.
With it only being a step up from the entry-level Renegade, the Jeep Compass may be a buyer's first experience with the brand, and you know what they say about first impressions. That is why we were pretty disappointed with the 2022 Jeep Compass' lackluster 2.4 liter, 177 hp engine. The low power combined with 9-speed transmission and hefty weight made for an overall sluggish driving experience. Our own Alex Stoklosa suggested that owners will "spend a lot of time stomping on the gas trying to keep up with traffic." That now thankfully changes for 2023.
We reckon that most car buyers can probably think of better ways to spend their time. It seems that Jeep has figured that out as well. The 2023 Jeep Compass 4x4 is ditching the 2.4 liter engine in favor of a standard 2.0 liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder from Stellantis' Global Medium Engine family that pushes out 200 hp and 221 lb ft of torque. That should be more than enough to get the new Compass cruising comfortably on the freeway without burying your foot through the floor. Maybe Jeep read our review?
The changes don't just stop with the engine either. Jeep's "Active Drive 4x4" system will also be standard issue across all models. The breathless engine and 2WD drivetrains are both being left behind in favor of boost and sending power to all of the wheels. We wouldn't blame any Jeep fan for celebrating this news as an early holiday gift.
The 9-speed transmission is also gone and being replaced by an 8-speed gearbox. For those curious about the '23 Compass off-road capability, Jeep says the Compass Trailhawk trim has a "trail rated 4x4 rock-crawl ratio" that is enabled by a "4.71:1 first gear ratio coupled with a 4.398 final drive to deliver its 20:1 class-leading crawl ratio."
The 2023 Jeep Compass will have five trims available: Sport, Latitude, Latitude LUX, Limited and Trailhawk all of which are currently available for order and should start arriving in North American dealerships in the first quarter of 2023.
