A little tour of my garage where I have some parts in progress and some that have been painted and are drying. I show how I painted the Octoports (or Hexports), the current status of the Power Couplers, and a paint test that shows the difference between painting Duplicolor Sonic Blue Pearl on top of a scrap part over primer and metallic.
I personally couldn't see a difference between painting the blue over primer compared to metallic aluminum. I strongly suggest you try this yourself to see if it's worth it to first paint metallic before the blue. I tend to paint a bit too thick, which may have skewed my results compared to how you paint.
A couple reasons to paint over metallic, even if there's no color difference, would be if the part has both blue and metallic areas. You could spray the metallic, then after giving the blue time to dry, mask the metallic areas off followed by painting the blue. Another reason would be in case you get a light scratch or chip in the blue that would then show the metallic color underneath instead of primer.
