[Technical note: This clip is a stereoscopic 3D video, but playback using NVIDIA's 3D Vision straight from a browser is no longer possible (as far as I know). Grabbing S3D files from YouTube via 4K Downloader (or similar software) and watching the videos "offline" is my own preferred workaround.]

As I've been saying for years now - and this holds true even after it having been abandonded by its creators - 3D Vision as a piece of technology is arguably superior to consumer-level VR gaming and similar innovations. Even high-end devices such as the HTC Vive remains a blurry mess compared to the crystal-clear output of a 3D Vision game running on a 120hz monitor. I can't use my most recent PC and monitor for this, but every time I hook up my older rig and return to a game like Tomb Raider 2013 I'm impressed by the immersive quality of the stereoscopic 3D. And just to be clear; S3D with real-time polygonal graphics in a video game results in a much stronger effect than what you get in 3D movies, so the rather underwhelming cinema 3D experience is not a meaningful point of comparison.

Other than the picture quality itself, a signficant advantage (as well as disadvantage) of S3D gaming compared to VR is that the former never required developers to innovate particularly much; no fancy movement peripherals or room-sized play areas are needed since the controls exactly the same with and without stereoscopic 3D. Thus, while VR could potentially revolutionize gaming as a whole (although we certainly haven't seen much of that yet!), 3D Vision is a more tangible and straightforward way to literally add a new dimension to both old and new games.

Despite the fact that NVIDIA officially ended its 3D Vision support last year, there is a small but dedicated Internet community which continue to release unofficial patches for specific games. Apart from "classic" 3D Vision titles such as the aforementioned Tomb Raider, I've been getting good results lately in older games such as Jade Empire as well as much newer ones such as Outer Wilds.

End note: In case you're wondering where "Part #1" in this series is, that refers to an Alan Wake S3D video in uploaded way back in 2012...
