Fun Fact: The original playthrough I did for this game was 49 minutes long. I went back and redid it after trying (and failing) to complete Mortal Kombat 3 with Smoke, and knocked 40 minutes off of my playtime. Let that sink in for a minute
Last Bronx was seemingly Sega's answer to Soul Blade, the creation of their arcade rivals Namco. It's set in and around various major landmarks of Tokyo, consisting of a story between warring gangs.
It has a similar complexity and depth in terms of fighting as that of Virtua Fighter 2, and indeed does very much feel like Virtua Fighter with weapons in many ways.
The final boss of the game is Red Eye, essentially Dural done right. He has moves taken from every other character, but is so unique in his style and his design that I didn't even really notice it until this playthrough. He's a boss which is technically very fair, but still difficult ultimately to defeat, a style Sega were quite easy to develop, and indeed helps all the more to show that this is VF with weapons.
So, this game is difficult, technically. However, when I did my original, 49 minute playthrough of this game, I noticed certain opponents were susceptible to dash attacks. Frustrated with MK3, I went back and put my theory into effect and, low and behold, I did the playthrough in one fifth of the time. Like VF2, this game gets incredibly difficult after the first few matches and, again, like VF2, the AI have a easy exploit for defeating them. Dash back, then press the attack button as you dash in. Or, you can dash back, and only dash in as they're in the middle of an attack animation. My apologies if anyone finds this cheap, but it's a little necessary. Indeed, this game has some remarkable quality to it, but I simply don't have the time to try and master it. Then again, the point of this series is how bosses and hidden characters play, and how viable it is to complete a playthrough of them, which is what I've shown here. All in all, Red Eye is a pretty damn good character, with a unique crazy persona which makes him pretty iconic compared to some of Sega's other bosses. It's a shame the Last Bronx franchise never really went anywhere (especially considering the success of Soul Calibur and Soul Blade, which I'll be touching on in the future), but as I understand it, it only really appealed to the Japanese market for the better part. Still a good fighting game ultimately, just perhaps a touch too complex to really get into nowadays.
