A playthrough as the hidden character Super Sonic in sixfortyfive's boss hack of Sonic the Fighters.

(Super Sonic has the same moves as regular Sonic. He is always in hyper mode, and is also invulnerable)

Here is the boss hack and emulator for this game, which can be downloaded from the following link:

So, finally, here's the only hidden character who actually was included in the game. I never did get to play as him in the Gems Collection port (Metal Sonic is cheap as hell, after all) but Super Sonic isn't much to write home about. Bothering to include any hidden characters at all is of course always appreciated, but man I would have preferred Honey be included instead. In fact, with constraint production time, why did they even bother to include him? Sega's choices just baffle me sometimes.

Super Sonic has the same movement as Metal Sonic (in that he floats around the arena), and has invulnerability, as well as always being in hyper state. This leads to him actually being quite fun to play as, due to his moves comboing endlessly into one another, and being able to destroy any opponent within mere seconds. To access Super Sonic normally, you have to defeat every opponent in the game without losing a round, and then defeat Metal Sonic in one round. In the second round, turn on Hyper mode and Sonic will turn into Super Sonic. And this means you get to use him for exactly one round in the entire game, despite all your hard effort because, of course, every character goes into permanent hyper mode in the bonus fight against Robotnik. What the hell was even the point? Again, it just seemed like they had no idea what they wanted to do design-wise in this game.

Luckily, Super Sonic is pretty damn fun to play as, and so he rounds off a very interesting game in terms of hidden and unplayable characters. Sonic the Fighters is one of the most infamous games there is in terms of unused and unplayable characters, and indeed one of the biggest inspirations for me doing these videos in the first place, so there's something definitely very satisfying about getting to this point.

That wraps it up for Sega's arcade fighting games, at least for a fair while, as I'll be covering Naomi fighting games in the future. For now, I'm going to return to covering 2D fighting games made by other studios, with the exception of one Capcom fighting game. As always, enjoy
