So, as I was discussing a little with vicenpvp a few days ago, Sonic the Fighters was programmed in such a way that the cutscene models are in fact coded as separate characters themselves. The only other game I can think of which does this is the PS1 port of Soul Blade, which I will also be covering in the future.

Eggman without his mech is a little basic here, really. A combo and a bomb throw attack. Nothing too special, but interesting to note at least

So, he's an interesting point. I suspect this version of Eggman was originally going to be a hidden character. In the name credits screen, he name comes up as Eggman (as opposed to the boss version, which is blank. It also comes up for Metal too, which implies he would have been hidden at one point). It's entirely probable that he was originally meant to be playable; a toned down version of the final boss for players to use, similar to BM and Mahler in Fighting Vipers. He wasn't included in the final version of the game of course, but then again neither was Honey the Cat, who was meant to be playable. It's a shame Sega so clearly rushed a number of aspects of this game. It seems at some point they just abandoned the viability of the project, as they gave up on extra, pushed it out into the arcades and then didn't even bother with a Saturn port. There's some solace, at least, in being able to play as this version of Eggman now.
