458 (FMV Feb.): Which Is More CRITICAL, the PATH or the Failure?
To wrap up FMV February for the year, I play an interactive movie that was at one point labeled the seventh worst PC game of all time. That's just a wee bit harsh. Critical Path takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. We've crashe don the island of the despotic General Minh and holed up in his control room. It's up to us to keep an operative named Kat alive and guide her to us so we can take a chopper out of here. Of course, the local humans, dubbed the Blood Oranges, and the revolting general himself won't make that task easy. Fortunately, Kat has nine lives (hmmm, someone's been playing WRF Studios games). Less fortunately, you lose a life if you pause the game!
The game isn't hard to beat in a day, especially since you can jump to any completed section, the checkpoins are fairly frequent, and the game isn't all that long. General Minh's notebook tells you what you need to do at certain places, so I start out by writing out a sheet of all the pertinent information, playing it the way we would have when it came out in 1993! It would have taken me less time except that I misread a coe and wrote it down long, and couldn't understand why Kat kept getting stoned to death at the elevator. I looked up hints just a couple of times, to not stream excessively long.
I admit it isn't the most polished and hasn't aged well. The video takes up such a small part of the screen, the gameplay isn't amazing, Kat is the only professional actress, and the novelty has worn off over the last 30 years. I'm glad I finally played through it and wouldn't have minded if it was like a dollar on steam. You can easily download it (thanks so much to The Collection Chamber for packaging it for modern PCs), but unless your strange like me, you could just watch a longplay of it instead.
But what other FMV games like in store for us?
(Sorry about hte werid camera flicker, fixed it later.)
