Rogue Worlds is an Indie, Action RPG Side Scroller Dungeon Crawler that feels like a more approachable, RPG take on Spelunky.

A More Approachable, RPG Take on Spelunky?
Yes.
Rogue Worlds has the side scrolling intensity of Spelunky, with you traversing a monster and trap filled random dungeon born of Procedural Generation, hunting for gold and treasure, and trying to get as deep as you can, all while doing your best to avoid death, as while as being chased by it!
Also, like in Spelunky, the gold doesn’t disappear: take that Noita!

Unlike the great, but brutal Spelunky, there are no instant death kill spikes here, nor are you chased by the Grim Reaper who 1 shots you, no!
Yes, in Rogue Worlds, falling on spike still hurts, as it should, but it is roughly 1/3 of your starting hp, not all of it!
Plus, a touch of the hunter deals about the same, so it hurts, but it’s not run ending hurt.

In another kind gesture of approachability, there is no apparent fall damage in Rogue Worlds, which is certainly not the case in Spelunky!

The Rogue Worlds RPG:
Like Spelunky, there is no exp on kills here.
Instead, the focus is on amassing gold, to buy powerful upgrades in the shops.

Unlike Spelunky, you can customize your run right at the start, as when a new run starts; you select 1 of 3 random starting loadouts.
Some examples:
Crossbow and Clocking
Crystal Dagger + Forcefield (360 knockback; big reflect projectiles)
Steel Spear + Forcefield
Steel Spear + Shield (continuous, one direction; can reflect attacks with timing)
Steel Sword + Clocking (Avoid traps and enemies)

Beyond the fun and impactful starting abilities; which all feel very different, you can find big chests in the dungeon, these grant permanent boosts for the run; fun!

There are also Forges present in the dungeon, which can upgrade weapon and spells; powerful!
Think putting permanent poison on a weapon, or boost its crit change by 10%, or make its hits weaken enemies; very nice.

There are altars to find as well, which allow a pick of 1 of 2 possible powerful perks: think a double jump, or wall jump; good stuff.

You can also find rooms with a little skull: these are Challenge rooms, full of respawning monsters.
If you survive their onslaught, you get 2 chests with a pick of 1 of 3 power upgrades; very nice!

Beware of the demon chests!
They offer great power, but call a friend to play!
Fly you fool!

Roguelite Meta Progression:
After each run, you lvl up a bit, gaining bronze coins.
In the starting Hub area, there is a tent with meta progression power upgrades.
These upgrades are powerful, and very meaningful.
Upgrades:
Starting with up to 2 extra healing potion
Start with extra gold
Heal slightly between lvls
Start with a random rune
Start with a random buff potion

Due to these very significant, stacking upgrades, if you choose to spend the coins, you will become much more durable in the dungeon, and these upgrades might be necessary for most people to beat the game, pushing this game firmly in the roguelite direction.

In more of a horizontal meta progression direction, there are also NPCs to rescue in the dungeon.
No Spelunky style kissies were offered, but instead; options!
Like the Smith, who can unlock additional weapons, spells, and tools, but these seem more different options, offering different ways to play the game, and not just flat out linear upgrades; good.
There is also the Monk: who offers a selection of different backgrounds to unlock, with different bonuses and downsides.

Controller Support is present and good, as is good old Mouse and Keyboard.
As a Side Scroller, using a gamepad just felt best here, so that is mostly what I used in the above video.

Note: This is an early look at the demo for Rogue Worlds, so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Rogue Worlds is an Indie, Action RPG Side Scroller Dungeon Crawler that feels like a more approachable, RPG take on Spelunky.
Rogue Worlds is easily worth a wishlist and a watch.
