It's not everyday you see BFG orbs being stuck in midair. Even in the distant lands of demon invaded Egypt, we can still find happenings that defy expectation and would require extensive research to learn of its explanation.

Either that, or the map's being a little bit funky with the particle cannon. It happens, I suppose.
