In this video we went through the tutorial and played and learned the basics of how to play Dwarf Fortress for the first time. After generating a 100 year old world, now set in the age of myth with over 12 thousand characters of note in the world who we will most likely never get to meet because of how huge the world is! We start out in an area the tutorial selected for us with lots of trees around us, probably a forest and seven dwarves around a wagon full of the last of our dwindling supplies. There is snow on the ground, some brooks and lakes or ponds, but no mountains or hills. We strike the earth and build our 1st stairwell down into the ground. We go a couple of layers deep so that we are digging in stone rather than earth and then carve some tunnels out. We dig out a room big enough to create a stockpile for all of our possessions. We probably should have build a refuge stockpile above ground but we forgot in the end. We continue digging, presumably with some pickaxes, picks or others tools that we presumably brought with us. Eventually we cut down some trees to harvest the wood resource and use the wood, pine I think, to create some workshops. We create the carpenters workshop out of wood and the stone crafting workshop out of, some weird stone I forget the name of!
We build beds and doors and eventually make some bedrooms for our dwarves. It is at that point that migrants migrate to our fortress, such that it is, and we now have 14 dwarves. I didn't realise at the time but some of the dwarves are children and they are all related to each other! It's a dwarf family! We move from spring to summer to autumn and then are visited by a trade caravan, since we previously build a trading post. We hual some stone crafts up to the trading post and tell out stone mugs and stone sceptres and amulets for beer, mead and wine!
We attempt to build a protective wall around our entrance but we never do quite manage that! Maybe in the next episode!
I'm having loads of fun with this game, I hope you enjoy the video!
