In this video we continue the tutorial and played and learned the basics of how to play Dwarf Fortress, including that sometimes lakes and rivers freeze and dwarves like yo drink beer. Apparently, if dwarves run out of beer, alcohol and water, they dehydrate and die to death. We are playing in the same generated 100 year old world as the last episode and in the same fort set in the age of myth with over 12 thousand characters of note in the world who we will most likely never get to meet because of how huge the world is! The wagon full of the last of our dwindling supplies has been dismantled. There is now even more snow on the ground, and the brooks and lakes or ponds, have all frozen over. The area is flat with no mountains or hills. Last time we said "strike the earth" and built our 1st stairwell down into the ground. This time we had to extend our tunnels further down and build a crypt. This episode we dug in the mud / earth / clay layer and created a farm plot to sow some plump helmet spores.. We dig out a room big enough to create more stockpiles and added a butcher. We slaughtered a two hump camel and made it into simple meals.
We also created a still workshop in order to brew some alcohol form the plants we gathered, but for some reason they never made more than 5 units. Perhaps it was a lack of barrels, so we created more in the carpenter's workshop We actually had a dwarf create a master lavel barrel! Oh! We also had to make a stonemason's workshop so that we could construct coffins!
We created a refuge stockpile above ground. We continue digging, presumably with some pickaxes, picks or others tools that we presumably brought with us. We cut down some trees around the wall to harvest the wood resource and use the wood, pine I think, to create some workshops. We create the carpenters workshop out of wood and the stone crafting workshop out of, some weird stone I forget the name of!
We built more beds and doors and eventually made some bedrooms for our dwarves. We might need more migrants soon to replace the ones that perished. I didn't realise at the time but some of the dwarves are children with beards! It's a dwarf family! We finally make it through Winter to the 1st day of spring before the end of the episode. Looking forward to more caravans arriving at the trading post. Hopefully we can sell and trade and haul stone crafts up to the trading post. Items like stone mugs and stone sceptres and amulets , crowns for beer, mead and wine!
We still have not finished the protective wall around our entrance, we need to finish that before danger arrives! Maybe in the next episode!
I'm having loads of fun with this game, I hope you enjoy the video!
