A Sign of Affection: Why Episode 1 Was So Romantic || Video Essay
This video is an essay about episode 1 of A Sign of Affection, which explains the budding relationship between Yuki Itose and Itsuomi Nagi. The origin of their romance is a funny story, because Yuki was initially kind of repelled by Itsuomi, because he was so jarringly direct in the way that he acknowledged her hearing impairment. But over time this very same quality became the reason why Yuki eventually fell in love with Itsuomi. My essay explains how that happened, with special attention to some of Itsuomi's more romantic gestures and the way in which they won Yuki over.
My story focuses on the way in which Itsuomi uses his physicality to communicate with Yuki, and how this physicality expresses the romance of his character, which seeks to communicate with Yuki on her own terms as a hearing impaired person. That originally annoyed Yuki somewhat, because she felt that she was being treated like an exotic animal, but eventually she realized that his behavior was coming from a sincere place of love and compassion. And that was what won her over.
My video also pays particular attention to their 'meet-cute' on the train, and their conversation in the cafe.
A Sign of Affection is a new anime based on the manga by Suu Morishita. It is produced by Ajia-do Animation Works and directed by Yūta Murano. I plan to make a more content as the series continues so be sure to subscribe for more!
