Chainsaw Man: How Makima Seduced Denji and Taught Him the Meaning of Love || Essay Series
This theory video is part of a ‘Chainsaw Man Expmained’ essay series. Here I explain the Makima's relationship to Denji and the reason why she chose to seduce him in exchange for defeating the Gun Devil.
The video begins by providing some context. I think that the best way to understand Makima's treatment of Denji is to start with a disagreement that she has with Aki Hayakawa early on in the story. Aki thinks that Denji isn't cut out for Public Safety because he doesn't have any loft ideals that can guarantee his commitment when the going gets tough. Makima doesn't see this as a problem, even though she understands better than anyone that Aki is kind of right: Denji's really just in it for selfish reasons (which is not a moral judgment, it's just a fact), and that means his commitment to Public Safety is extremely fragile; he nearly quits on a number of occassions.
But this is the reason why Makima seduces Denji. If Denji cannot produce good reasons to stay with Public Safety from within his own heart, then Makima will provide them, by promising her own love in exchange for his service. That is Makima's tactic of manipulation.
