This video is an interpretive essay of the great anime film Angel's Egg. I pose the all-important question: What's in the egg???

You might think the answer is easy: it's an angel! But it isn't actually all that straightforward, because the movie actually offers two separate interpretations of what the angel actually is. Each of the two characters (the man and the woman) has a different idea about what's inside the egg, and I explain both of their points of view without settling the question of who (if anyone) is correct. I don't settle the question because I don't think it really matters. The movie is less about what's actually inside the egg, and more about the conflict that emerges from the different points of view adopted by the man and the woman whose story the movie traces.

Angel's Egg is an anime movie that was directed by the great Mamoru Oshii, who also made Ghost in the Shell and its sequel, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence. And Angel's Egg shares the philosophical qualities of those movies. It's available for free on YouTube, and you should definitely check it out!
