AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES Review in 60 Seconds #short
Want a visual novel where you play as a perverted detective who roots around in people's dreams? Then check out this condensed version of the Cheapness affordable gaming review of AI: The Somnium Files [Episode 85]
This is the condensed version of the review that shows how AI: The Somnium Files (By Spike Chunsoft):
-This is a visual novel first and foremost with a lot of reading and while the puzzles are fun and simple on one hand, they involve the irrational nature of dreams (For instance choosing to smell a plant makes it shrink and fly up your nose) and thus this lack of understandable consequences to the options means that a lot of times it's more trial and error than logic
-Fortunately, the detective story is good and complex (Surprisingly watertight but some facts are convenient and one big one is kept from you until quite late that involves what is possible in the game universe which might be a tad cheap) and it made formulate and re-formulate my theories as to what was happening (Which is quite an effective method for writing a detective story)
-The characters and dialogue are good too (If your character is mired in filth and puns) but sometimes they will break character for the sake of someone else making the jokes (I loved it but I'm a bit weeby) and sometimes jokes do get overused and fomo exploited because inspecting the same elements at different times during the investigation can yield different jokes
-Tonally it's surprisingly upbeat for a story about a serial killer (Ludicrous action, sentimentality, puns, overt innuendo)
-Just don't expect it to be AS GOOD as Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma
-It has good, extensive voice acting (Can get hammy but maybe that's more the fault of the sentimentality of the material and sometimes this approach works)
-Quite good visually especially for a visual novel (Spike Chunsoft upgraded their engine, and this element is better than Zero Time Dilemma. It still has limitations but it's quite the improvement) and has nice anime design and touches like picture-in-picture (Some areas can look lifeless and some somniums can be too colourful and grating with the overlays)
