youtube dislikes showing people short videos, so you may have missed the actual map 1. it's here:    • [Alien Vendetta] MAP01: Sunset (UV-Ma...

alien vendetta's first map is a pretty light affair that comes and goes pretty quickly without leaving too much of an impression, even if the replacement midi is really nice. but 15 years after alien vendetta released, brad "vorpal" spencer put together an alternate pair of introductory levels. i haven't played these before, but i'm fully in support of needless completionism so let's check them out.

on to the map itself. it's honestly kind of a strange way to introduce alien vendetta even if i like it a lot more than the original map 1. it's a lengthy open-ended affair with lots of switches, secret passages, and occasionally head-scratching navigation. kind of reminds me of doom 2's downtown, which is a pretty mean thing to say about a level. but once you get into the swing of things it's not too bad to come to terms with finding landmarks and getting around, and there's no elevator ride you have to take three separate times either. it's also relatively lightweight in the combat front, although the final ambush after getting the red key is pretty clever and definitely caught me off guard. there's also kind of a useless cyberdemon that mostly exists to suck up all the cells you're given. it takes a bit of coercion to get it in the right position but once you do it isn't really capable of doing anything.
