Designs for a multi-billion pound next generation nuclear-armed submarine to replace the ageing Trident fleet have been agreed by the Government today. The Defence Secretary told the Commons it paved the way for detailed plans to be drawn up ahead of a final decision in 2016. In a concession to the coalition, the Liberal Democrats were told alternatives to Trident would also be investigated. Shadow defence secretary Jim Murphy said uncertainty over potential nuclear weapons in North Korea and Iran showed why replacing Trident was important.
