Now that Amid Evil's long-awaited expansion is finally available, I wanted to replay the original campaign to refresh my memory, since nearly 4 years have passed since I first played it.

As someone who appreciates not only Quake but also Heretic and Hexen, I'm a big fan of Amid Evil's aesthetics and arsenal. Even before RTX support was added, Amid Evil already did a lot of work with colored lighting and reflections - to the point where I think it sometimes looks better without RTX anyway.

The game is already plenty hard on stream encoding even with RTX off, and turning on ray-traced reflections tends to cause "sparkling" effects which would make the encoder's job that much harder (not to mention it tends to plummet my FPS to 60 at most), so I mostly played with it off, but turned it on in a few specific places to check out the effects. The one place where I saw RTX really shine (kind of literally) was the first level of The Forges, where the lightning strikes have a much more pronounced effect on the wet terrain. (It's too bad that The Forges are otherwise one of the least-enjoyable area, largely due to trap city.)

Given that I hadn't played the game in nearly 4 years, I didn't remember a lot of details, so this was somewhat like a first playthrough, though I definitely remembered overall area themes and quickly recognized enemies when I saw them again.

One thing I had definitely forgotten was how brutal the final episode was... especially with its choice of how to end the final non-boss map. I clearly remembered the final episode as being easily the coolest-looking and exceeds expectations in that regard, but I forgot how I wasn't entirely a fan of its combat.

Here's hoping that The Black Labyrinth has equally-interesting locales with more consistently-enjoyable gameplay. I'm looking forward to seeing what new concepts it adds to the mix.
