Hey guys so I’ve got some massive news today involving anthem, that’s both good and bad. Some of the news I’m about to discuss, you may have expected, while some other parts of this news may surprise you, so with that said lets get straight into it. After a recent article was put up by Jason Schrier, the famous investigative gaming journalist, we got some big insight into the development of anthem, as well as Bioware and EA’s approach to the game, and their current situation with development and concerns. If you want to read the full article, I will post the link down below. But from what I read of the article, the three big bullet points or take aways from the reading were:
1. The game will be out in 2019, as 2018 was “never realistic,” but probably not after March 2019 when EA’s fiscal year ends
2. After a massive upset with Mass Effect Andromeda, BioWare has a lot riding on the success of Anthem, and it could dictate the entire future of the studio, one way or another. Including moving lots of personnel over from Dragon Age 4 and SWTOR.
3. Bioware is actively watching and learning from Destiny 2 and the division, and staff and employees have been demoralized, due to some big youtubers spreading misinformation about the company, and causing the employees on the ground level to experience lots of anxiety, and work related depression.
Ok so let’s address these points one at a time. For the first point, I think we all predicted the game was going to be delayed, it had been predicted for some time, and with the placeholder release date being holiday 2018, it was easy for EA to move it back some. EA still wants to release the game before March 2019, to allow it to remain in the 2018 fiscal year, and will allow the game to have an extra 3 months of development time or so, but overall this is not a big delay.
Moving on to the second point, I got a little uneasy reading this piece, but at the same time I have been saying this for a long time and have believed it to be true. ME: Andromeda’s relative failure shelved Mass Effect indefinitely. Support for SWTOR is probably going to be phased out, and Dragon Age 4 has been rebooted and has had major personnel hop over to Anthem. Basically this is going to be like I said, Anthem is Bioware’s last ditch effort, and an all or nothing kind of moral and attitude, is being put into the game. This is both good and bad. On the good side, I think this gives us fans of Bioware all the more reason to be excited and have trust that they will make this a truly great game. But on the bad side, if this game manages to bomb, Bioware may very well end up as a shelved studio, similar to visceral games.
A lot of people have also been worrisome that EA doesn’t have the patience for a game like Anthem, since it could have a rough launch, like all the other games in the genre: Destiny, The Division and Diablo 3. In fact it took years for those games to find themselves, and evolve into their best forms. Most think EA won’t wait for that, but I think there is a good chance that EA won’t need to wait, as it sounds like EA will make sure that loot boxes, are not intrusive and cosmetic only, and that Bioware is carefully watching and observing games, like the division, and destiny 2, and making sure to replicate the good parts of the games, pre and post launch, awhile avoiding all the mistakes and hiccups, those games have had. They have been working on the game since 2012, and don’t plan on releasing a disappointing and controversial game, they want this to be their magnum opus, and a game to regain fan’s trust.
.....
the talent and the potential, you have the resources and the marketing, combine those two halves creatively and intelligently, and you can change gamers minds, and make a ton of money based off a good product, and good word of mouth. I will be watching carefully in the next coming months, and I will eat crow if I have to, but I want nothing more, than a great game, because at the end of the day, I play games for fun, and as a way to connect with friends all over the world.
