"Limbo" is an award-winning title whose gameplay consists of a mix of Jump & Run, adventure and puzzle challenges. The developer, Playdead, released the game for the Xbox in 2010 and then ported it to the PlayStation, as well as for the Mac and Windows PCs. So now, it's the iOS platforms' turn and I can already say that the title has lost none of its charm. So if you are a fan of gloomy adventure games, you should consider the investment of € 4,49. An Android version does currently not exist and for the iOS version, you should at least have an iPhone 4S or an iPod Touch of the 5th generation.
In Limbo, you take control of a little boy who wakes up at the beginning of the game in a dark forest full of dangers and is looking for his sister. You use a simple one-touch control to navigate the boy. Just keep a finger pressed on the screen and move it gently into the direction you want to go to, just like with an invisible joystick. The further you move your finger, the faster the boy runs. By a swiping gesture up or diagonally up the boy jumps in the desired direction. If you lay a finger at the screen while an object is close, the boy may hold this item. By moving your finger to the right or the left, the object is moved to the right or the left, too. The controlls is are very simple and very intuitive, very nice to play!
The gloomy atmosphere of the planet is fascinating - you can sense the danger of by this world at first glance. By moving through this dark world, every few meters you are confronted with a new danger. You will have thorns in your path that you have to skip. At other points you will find a lake that you have to cross by boat. Then again there will be bear traps, swinging ropes, obstacles of stones that seem insurmountable at first sight. Or swarms of bees and venomous giant spiders you have to escape. Often you just have to find out how you can use the existing objects in the scene to get ahead. Here you have to push, there you can pull to make a jump at the right place, just to get clinged to the rope with the bees' nest which again is pulled down by your own weight straight into the bear trap. Sure, Limbo offers an incredible amount of trial and error. This is sometimes frustrating when you just don't know how to continue. However, there are a lot of solutions on the internet, also the reset points are before every scene and the unique atmosphere of the black and white world has its special spell.
My conclusion: Limbo is a really great but also very challenging game. The style of the game is very impressive and despite the black and white graphic there is a lot to discover. In addition, the atmospheric sound, often consisting of only the sound effects, make you hear exactly when a threat is on the march. The puzzles are sometimes very tricky, so you should not justli ke the exploration of an alien world, but also to work with your head. If you like the title OddPlanet for iOS, Limbo is exactly for you. Of course, Limbo is the original and is definitely better than OddPlanet. That's it for today. As always, I'm looking forward to your thoughts about the game in the comments. -
