Robocop is the official app to the Robocop-movie of 2014, which starts on February the 12th in cinemas across the USA. The original Robocop movie by Paul Verhoeven has been released in 1987 and is one of the cult movies of the science fiction genre. I will tell you in my review, whether the new Robocop-App from Glu Games has cult-potential too. Robocop is available as a free app for iOS and Android .

The story of Robocop corresponds to the original story and takes place in the year 2028. You play Alex Murphy, a cop and father. Murphy is seriously injured during a police operation, but thanks to the Omni Corporation he can survive: half as man and half as a robot. So you continue as Robocop to secure the streets of Detroid and battle all evil guys. The gameplay of the game is similar to the Epoch series and the Glu- title Frontline Commando. You move Robocop from cover to cover to take the enemies under fire. With arrow keys on the side of the screen you are moving between the covers back and forth. As in first person shooters you can look around with the left side of the screen and aim and fire on the right side of the screen. About buttons at the bottom of the screen you can activate a slow-motion mode and defeat the opponents by tapping. Or you can order drones which support you for a while. However you can not use these skills unlimited. So you fire your way through short missions, which you can select from a mission map. Each mission only takes a few minutes. Between the missions you can stock up Robocop with upgrades and new weapons. For this, you have two virtual currencies available: bills and gold. You can earn bills through the missions in the game, it is far more difficult to get gold through playing. So if you want to get gold, you are stuck with InApp-purchases.

My conclusion:
Robocop is no cult-game, but a rock solid shooter without highlights, that can score with good graphics and simple controls. There ist quite some atmosphere in the game and it makes fun clean the streets of Detroit. You can aim at explosive barrels, eliminate snipers and you have to prove your skills in boss fights. There are no suprises or quality cutscences. But the biggest weakness of the game is the freemium game concept. It is simply hard to complete the game without InApp purchases. You simply can't earn enough gold and bills for new weapons and equipment, or it just takes a very long time. So don't expect to much. -
