Across Age 2 is an action role-playing game from the German Publisher FDG Entertainment, which already brought us so fantastic games like Oceanhorn and Banana Kong. Across Age 1 has been released in 2010 and defined the genre of action role-playing games on mobile platforms - but to be honest, there was hardly competition at that time. Across Age 2 is a consistent continuation of the first part with old friends and a brand new story. Across Age 2 is available only for iOS, unfortunately an Android version does not exist. The iPhone-version of Across Age 2 costs € 3.59, the iPad version is available for € 4,49.
The subtitle of Across Age 2 is named "Of Past, Present and Future". The subtitle indicates what Across Age is all about: time travel. The characters Ceska and Ales are well known from Across Age 1 - now you can play them again. And there is another character in Across Age 2 : the young girl Lily. Lily lives in a cruel future in which Ales is a mighty tyrant. Ales is far too powerful in the future, so Lily decides to travel back in time to stop a less powerful Ales. But the present is different than Lily expects. Ales and Ceska are absolutely nice and completely different than in the future. And: Lily gets injured during her time travel, so she needs the help of Ales and Ceska. So you start with Ales, Ceska and Lily in an exciting adventure in which you travel across the times to prevent a cruel future. You will change history, but you will change it for the better ?
The actual gameplay of Across Age 2 is based on the predecessor and very reminiscent of 16-bit classics such as The Secret of Mana and The Legend of Zelda. Across Age 2 is a mix of RPG and action-adventure. You play through a 2D bird's-eye view, you move your characters through a huge world, which is designed to provide around 15 hours of gameplay. That's about as much as its predecessor and the action-adventure hit Oceanhorn. For a mobile game the length of the game is gigantic. Expect a lot of dungeons, villages, traders, crazy characters, secrets, treasure chests, boss fights and small puzzles.
A special feature of the game is - just as with the predecessor or The Secret of Mana - that your characters act as a team that help each other. At the bottom of the screen you can tap on the character that you want to control. Of course, gameplay, enemies and puzzles have been designed for team play. For example, some opponents are particularly susceptible to the magic of Ceska, while other enemies are badly affected by the sword of Ales. Sometimes there are switches or treasure chests on a higher ground, which you can only reach when one character throws the other character up. A tap on the team button combines the separate characters again. The character you actualy play, gains more experience points by defeating enemies than the passive character. You should therefore periodically change the characters, so that they remain equally strong.
The controls of the game are classic. You have a digital control pad in the left corner of the screen to control your characters, via buttons on the right side you can attack your opponent, change magic spells or use one of the many items. With a button at the top left you have access to the menu and your inventory. Here you can also use one of the many collected items such as magical stones, food or potions. All in all the controls are well known from the predecessor and other games of the genre, so you will quickly be in control of the game. -
