Apple II Game Demonstration Series - Airheart
Here we have Dan Gorlin's second and final game for the Apple II, Airheart. Airheart, published by Broderbund in 1986. While many games use double high resolution graphics, this is one of the few that performs really well on the 1MHz 6502 CPU of the Apple //e. The use of color and the many varied animations makes this a real later gem of Apple II gaming.
The gameplay requires some explanation or you may be hopelessly lost trying to navigate the ocean trying to achieve the goals set out for you. You must retrieve the sword, then followed by the goblet and finally the harp. You start with one life and one sled but can earn more by finishing these tasks. You can shoot forward and maneuver all across the ocean. The jets will enable you to go faster, hover in the air or underwater.
In order to find each of the three items, first you must find a white island. This is done by shooting a bubble at the start and following the glimmer. When you reach the white island you will find several Robots you must shoot and then collect their pods. If you don't collect all the pods, the Robots will respawn. After that you must touch the white island. Then you must find a green island, which are much more common, and repeat the process. This will return you back to the starting point and there you will receive your next quest. After you earn the three items you must rescue the princeling and fight all seven types of Robots.
For this and the following captures, I have replaced the Dazzle DVC-100 with the GV-USB2 composite capture device. The comb filtering on the GV-USB2 is more complex than that on the Dazzle.
