Apple II Game Demonstration Series - Choplifter
I am initiating a new series of video and audio captures of Apple II games. Here I start with one of the best action games for the Apple II, Dan Gorlin's Choplifter from 1982, released by Broderbund Software. The object of the game is simple, you must rescue 64 civilians trapped behind enemy lines. This game was originally developed for the Apple II and takes advantage of its two-button joystick, which helps it play better than some of its ports to one-button joystick systems.
In this series, one of my primary goals to give a proper capture for the Apple II. What do I mean by a "proper" capture? I do not mean a perfect capture, reasonable people can debate what perfect is. All videos I have seen of Apple II games were taken from an emulator, taken by filming a monitor's screen or captured at 30fps. This capture was taken with my unenhanced Apple //e, captured at 60fps with a Dazzle DVC100 composite video capture card. There is always room for improvement with video capture, but this is the standard by which future captures should be judged.
Audio was captured via an audio cable connected from my PC's line in to the Apple Speaker and ground via alligator clips. This worked for the IBM PC Speaker in my past captures well and it appears to work equally as well for the Apple Speaker.
The Floppy Emu ran the .woz disk image of the original game disk, which will not run on an Enhanced Apple //e. I am also using my Gravis PC Gamepad using an IBM PC Joystick to Apple Joystick adapter dongle. I really appreciate the digital control in most Apple II games.
