Apple II Game Demonstration Series - Number Munchers
Number Munchers is another classic originating from MECC dated to 1986. MECC, the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium, was an early pioneer in integrating computer technology into education, starting with mainframes and time-share systems in the early 1970s. The influence of MECC far exceeded the confines of Minnesota. No child who attended a computer lab in the United States in the 1980s would have been unfamiliar with MECC software. The Apple II was probably the platform on which they had the greatest impact.
Number Munchers is a solid reason why MECC was so beloved. Which would you rather do, solve math problems on worksheets or play a game where you had to eat problems and avoid bad guys while doing it? The point system allowed you to compete against the whole class. There is a hidden menu (not shown), accessed with Ctrl-A, which allows you to adjust difficulty settings. Number Munchers in its Equality and Inequality selections, requires students to use deductive reasoning: given the answer, they must select the equations which lead to the answer. Two other games in the series were released for the Apple II, Word Munchers (which predates this game) and Fraction Munchers.
