Once there was a rumor that DDR EXTREME was the last game of DDR Series. Of course DDR Series is continuing in 2021. However, before DDR Supernova was released in 2006,
There were no arcade versions of DDR, but PS versions often released. Between 2002 and 2005, DDR was one of the most famous rhythm games in US, so US players wanted to re-release DDR Series.
In Japan, after DDR MAX-DDR 6th MIX was released, it was not as popular as previous series, and players didn't play as they had played DDR 1st, or 2nd(included Link Ver.), or 3rd(included PLUS). DDR MAX has no songs once were contained in previous version. Like beatmania 4th MIX, released in 1999, there were only new songs, and more higher levels.
DDR EXTREME contains famous original songs, or license songs that once were selected by players much, like IF YOU WERE HERE by Jennifer, or Butterfly by Smile-dk. It also contains other Konami Bemani series songs like The Least 100sec from GuitarFreaks & DrumMania, or 321 Stars from original beatmania(5keys). It contains more songs than DDR 4th MIX(150 songs for ALL MUSIC), included some unlock songs.
Until DDR series started to re-release games in 2006, DDR EXTREME is the game that contains songs max. Up to 200 songs can be played.
When you select songs, press Left and Right buttons simultaneously to sort songs in order. ALL songs contained in EXTREME will be sorted in folders like DDR 1st to EXTREME, CS version, club version, beatmania, IIDX, and other BEMANI series.

코나미 시스템 573 디지털 기판을 사용하는 마지막 댄스 댄스 레볼루션(이하 DDR) 시리즈. 스핀오프 혹은 외전, 또는 번외 작품들을 제외하고 넘버링으로 간주하면 8번째. DDR 시리즈를 여기에서 마무리를 하려고 했다는 이야기가 나오는 작품으로, 수록곡들의 일부에서 제법 마지막이라는 분위기를 풍기는 곡들을 확인할 수 있다.
다만, 북미에서 DDR의 인기가 높게 나타났고, 이를 기반으로 한 여러 해킹 버전 혹은 부틀렉이 만들어져 가동되었기 때문에, 익스트림 이후 거의 4년만에 DDR 슈퍼노바가 출시되어 다시 시리즈가 전개되기 시작했다. 4년간 가정용 이식을 제외한 어떤 작품도 나오지 않았기 때문에 슈퍼노바의 출시는 꽤나 크게 다가왔고, 지금에 이르게 되었다. 다만 MAX 당시부터 나타났던 매니악층 지향은 변하지 않아서, 2020년대 현재 DDR의 초창기에 가지고 있었던 대중성은 많이 희석되고 본가인 일본 내에서 플레이하는 사람들을 보기는 타 리듬게임들에 비하면 쉽지는 않은 편.
당시 북미 지역 중심으로 가동되었던 익스트림을 해킹한 버전들은 그래픽이 조악하게 바뀌어 있었거나 곡 자체의 속도를 오버클럭시켜 높여놓거나 옵션을 다양하게 걸 수 있었다던가 하는 식으로 이루어져 있었다. 오버클럭의 경우에는 이로 인해 기판이 망가지는 일도 있었다고 한다.
- 이야깃거리 -
코나미 시스템 573 디지털 기판의 용량 문제로 인해 음질은 좋지 못한 편. 손실압축된 오디오 파일을 사용. 그래도 수록곡은 200곡 이상으로, 가정용을 비롯한 여러 작품들의 수록곡들로 구성되어 있었다. 타 작품들로부터의 이식 포함.
타임 릴리즈 형식으로 코드를 공개해, 테스트 모드에서 특정 커맨드 입력으로 들어갈 수 있는 어펜드 모드에서 입력하면 곡들을 통상 해금으로 전환시킬 수 있었다. 대상곡들로는 MAX 300이나 파라노이아 서바이버 MAX 등이 해당.
선곡 화면에서 좌우 방향 버튼을 동시에 누르는 것으로 곡들을 정렬시킬 수 있다. 최초 수록 버전을 기준으로 정리되어 있다. 이를 사용하지 않으면 곡들을 정렬하지 않은 디폴트 선곡 화면에서 선곡할 수 있는 곡 수에 제한이 있다. 이를테면, 클럽 버전에 수록되어 있는 오리지널 비트매니아(5키) 출신의 곡들은 폴더 별 정렬을 하지 않으면 확인할 수 없다.
