hello everyone Archcraft is an arch fork that focuses on minimalism and lightweight. In the video we will take a look at what distinguishes Archcraft from the arch mother. Stay tuned.
the distro
Archcraft's roots are in India. Constitutionally, information is currently quite scarce. It seems that the whole project hangs on one main developer by the name of Aditya Shakya. A total of 6 contributors are listed on the GitHub page of the project, but ultimately the distro is probably based on the shoulder of a lone wolf.
According to Distrowatch, the first release was in October 2021. But that doesn't mean that's correct, because the first Reddit entry introducing Archcraft is dated early 2020. My installation of Archcraft took place in August 2021. Since then, the thing has been running in my test environment. Why so long? For Distors with so little service, I also check something for relevance criteria and general stability. After all, you have to manage your limited time and I want to avoid falling for one-offs.
Archcraft is a minimal Linux distro built on top of Arch. It aims to be a lightweight system. This is already evident from the fact that desktop heavyweights such as Gnome or KDE are not initially offered directly. Instead, either the window manager Openbox is used or, as here, Xfce.
It is based on Arch directly and wants to offer a real Arch experience as well. But where a clear deviation from Arch can be pinpointed is in the installation process. Here it is made possible graphically with Calamares. Another difference to Arch is the integration of the Arch User Repository (AUR), which can be addressed via the AUR helper "yay".
distribution model
As already stated, Archcraft is based on Arch Linux and thus inherits everything associated with Arch. Bleeding Edge top current software is on board.
architecture
Package management and native package format Archcraft is only available for 64-bit architecture and supports the Tar format known from Arch.
Commissioning / download from page
Want to get started? Understood. Go to the Archcraft page and then click Download and then the blue Download button again. At the time of making this video, the march 15 image was the current image. You can download via Github, Sourceforge or Torrent. Once the ISO is downloaded, please verify its checksum as I demonstrated in the video . There will also be a small series on how this can be verified under Windows, macOS and Linux. But I don't know what will go online first. So if this video goes online first, check out my existing video. Otherwise you can also find the series on my channel. Archcraft's checksums are available on the download page .
Commissioning / installation
It starts in live mode and the Calamares Installer makes the installation noticeably easier compared to Arch and feels like decades, if I may allow myself to comment personally.
By the way, the password for the live user is username liveuser and password liveuser.
