Assassin's Creed: 1889
Assassin's Creed is a universe that lends itself to a lot of fantasising about different epochs and eras in which a hypothetical assassin would run around. The beautiful thing about history is how long and varied it is, and how many stories there are to tell at any given time, in any given place. I hold a particular affection for the modern Assassin's Creed eras, something that I know a lot of people don't share. But there is a certain atmosphere and feel that I get from Modern AC settings that I just don't get from the ancient or Middle Ages games. Particularly, The helix episodes in Unity, where we travel to La Belle Epoque, and WW2, The moments in Syndicate when characters aren't talking and the weather is dreary, and the WW1 section. All these little glimpses into what a modern AC would look like are a really fun pastime for me as a fan.
A lot of people have mentioned my custom channel outfit by Kinimod looks very modern, maybe a little too modern for revolutionary Paris. So I thought we would travel a century into the future to match the world to the outfit. Here Arno runs around exploring this area of Unity in a way we haven't been able to do before. For me, this is sort of a demo for a game that would be called Assassin's Creed: 1889. This has been one of my favourite videos to make, not because it has any incredible stealth kills, because it doesn't, but because of the feeling that playing and recording this evoked. Even watching it back, I have such an unsettling yet comforting feeling watching Arno run around these gorgeous but deserted city streets, with the amazing and tense music in the background. It's also so fun and beautiful to play through these sections without a timer or a bunch of glitches going on, to just enjoy the beautiful maps the developers created for just a handful of missions.
I don't know why, this area felt somewhat haunted to me. Like this was a dream or an incomplete memory. The missing NPCs just generated this unsettling feeling that I loved sinking myself into when running around. It felt like some sort of Bioshock-esque vibe, where a character runs around this Parisian, modern world while knowing that something isn't quite right. And that is a feeling that I loved having in AC. I hope the guy who made this makes the same for WW2 and Medieval sections as well.
