Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a game I've struggled to get into for months now. My attempted playthrough last year (over 40 hours of gameplay with only a fraction of the world explored) fell apart completely due to general AC fatigue after Origins and a disastrous decision to play the new game on Nightmare difficulty (and stubbornly refusing to change course once I discovered why it was not such a great idea).

The highest difficulty setting turns the otherwise rather simplistic combat system into a desperate war of attrition, in which a single mistake can erase half an hour's worth of progress. My thinking behind the choice of difficulty was that I wanted to make the repetitive pseudo-action RPG gameplay of contemporary Asssassin's Creed more meaningful and turn the open world exploration into less of a mindless chore. But while it can be exciting to take on several well-armed soldiers in a nail-biting skirmish and defeat them against all odds, the amount of trial-and-error needed to make any kind of progress whatsoever really grinds the game to a halt for me. Also, the challenge is further compounded by ACO's level scaling and its needlessly aggressive Mercenaries system, which has a habit of throwing high-level units into the mix when you're already severely outnumbered.

After many miserably failed attempts to get back into the action, I finally got into a sort of Zen state yesterday in which everything somehow clicked and I was able to clear out the whole island of Mykonos with only a few deaths, which felt really satisfying and empowering. While Odyssey can probably never feel as fresh and relevant as my 2017 GOTY Origins did, it still has great escapism potential and it would be a shame not to explore the rest of the game's environments (including those massive otherwordly DLCs which were recently released).
