The combat in Days Gone started out as a real slog, bit is slowly getting more satisfying as I unlock more powerful weapons and abilities. That's more or less the same experience as I had with Rage 2 recently, but unlike Avalanche's sandbox action game the character progression and quest structure is pointlessly drawn-out in Days Gone. The slow trickle of new activities is the main reason behind the game's pacing issues, and the only explanation I can think of is that BEND Studios really wanted the player to spend a lot of time on Deacon St John's bike (mission accomplished!).

I'm not a huge fan of the Deacon/Boozer bromance aspect of the story, since Boozer's character alternates between being comic relief and a pain in the ass (with a sprinkle of gravitas thrown into the mix to keep the player reasonably engaged). Other than that, though, the game gets a lot of narrative mileage out of its supporting cast. Wile not all of them are especially sympathetic, the script usually goes just deep enough that they manage to transcend mere genre tropes. Some cheesy lines and forced plot devices notwithstanding, Days Gone does have some of the more effective dialogue scenes in an AAA game since the last Naughty Dog release.
