Part of the reason why I struggle to care about Assassin's Creed Odyssey despite being a huge fan of Origins is that the latest AC game doesn't have the sympathetic, mournful and interestingly conflicted protagonist Bayek around to provide an emotional anchor for all the pseudo-historical shenanigans going on in the typically over-plotted campaign. Kassandra can be a lot of fun as a character, but her quest to reunite a family and take on an evil cult is more straightforward and less fraught with tension and ambiguity than Bayek and Aya's involvement in the politics of a crumbling dynasty besieged by foreign powers. Also, it was a little weird to see Odyssey reuse the death of children - an important theme both in the main story and in memorable side quests of Origins - as a plot point. How many fictional kids does Ubisoft need to kill off in order to make us feel something?
