Days Gone [Gameplay #4] - Ground Zero
While Days Gone doesn't make a great case for why the world needs yet another new zombie story, this game's particular mix of genre tropes manage to stay relevant by playing it straight and keeping things personal. In large part due to Sam Witwer's excellent performance, main protagonist Deacon St John convincingly straddles the line between shrill anti-hero and traumatized survivor (that said, it might help that I've never watched the TV series Sons of Anarchy, which apparently was a major source of inspiration for BEND Studios). The flashback scenes with his long lost wife Sarah are as cheesy as they are genuinely affecting, and there are plenty of fascinating side characters (veritable slave driver Ada Tucker and haunted patriarch Iron Mike come to mind) to interact with during the course of the story.
