Days Gone [Gameplay #7] - Let Justice Roll Down Like Waters
0Deacon St John represents a familiar blend of hero/anti-hero traits; he's a grumpy but likeable kind of a guy who saves innocent people and ruthlessly murders those who stand in his way. In that sense he's well within the modern trope of a (typically male) protagonist who both elicits and somehow retains audience sympathy despite being a horribly flawed human being. Typically, though, this highly problematic character development is at least partly the result of script that ultimately turns a blind eye to the words and deeds which should indeed make us ashamed. Since Days Gone keeps signaling that Deacon is crossing the line, it's still not clear whether the story will ultimately try to have its cake and eat it, or whether the writers will face up to their own moral calculus. This unresolved tension is probably the main reason why the plot is still interesting to me, but I also wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the game doesn't stick the landing in the way necessary for this kind of high-wire act to work.
